The Wall Street Journal formally reported something most of us know implicitly, the big players in the cloud are investing heavily in it. Still it’s impressive to see the hard numbers. In 2016, Microsoft, Google, and (of course) Amazon invested over $31.54 billion in capital expenditures and leases. If you like more granular numbers, that works out to $1,000 per second.

The IBM 1403 leaned heavily on IBM’s history with typewriters. Except it used an elaborate series of hammers to hit behind the paper into an ink ribbon and the alphanumeric character. Some models used up to 132 hammers in a single printer.
Amazon announced they will be opening up a new AWS region in Stockholm, Sweden by 2018. This will be welcome news to the Scandinavian countries in Northern Europe. Amazon specifically cited Denmark, Finland, Iceland, and Norway as the primary beneficiaries.

To say Apple can be cagey with announcements is a bit of an understatement. They’re usually a stonewall of “no comment” until a product announcements, even as leaks seep out to inform the press of new products. So I was surprised to see such a frank discussion about the future of the Mac Pro with a group of journalists, including John Gruber.
It was a bit of a shock to see yesterday that Apple will be moving to in-house GPU designs for all their mobile products. They’ve had a good run of products on the back of Imagination Technology’s IP. It left me wondering how long they’ve been working on this, and if any acquisitions had quietly set the stage for the move. Perusing their recent acquisitions, I didn’t really see anything that obviously foreshadowed the move.
When I heard that Apple was going to be updating millions of iOS devices to their new file system, I wondered how the rollout would go. I should have had a clue when Apple debuted a new file system in a relatively minor update for iOS 10, rather than wait for the next big revision.

The virtual machine escape demonstrated at Pwn2Own this year showed that for even as isolated software defined machines, VMs are not without there security concerns. Andrea Mauro took this as inspiration to reflect on some of the other vulnerabilities. Virtually networking is probably the most common, as the guest machines as vulnerable as any other to these kind of exploits. These are mitigated by the supposed isolation each machine enjoys. Andrea does point out though that any time you have shared components between machines, you introduce the possibility of mitigating the virtual machines inherent estrangement.
