Meta Platforms Inc. and Samsung Electronics are readying smart glasses for later this year, according to published reports.

Facebook’s parent company is preparing a new version of its Ray-Ban glasses, although they are not the augmented reality-ready devices that are still under development. The new models, a deluxe version of its popular smart glasses, will start at about $1,000 and run up to $4,000. They include hand-gesture controls as well as a screen for displaying photos and apps, Bloomberg reported. Meta’s latest would be positioned as an alternative to Apple Inc.’s iPhone and other mobile devices, the report said.

Since their debut, Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses have fared well in the competitive wearable market. But what has techies salivating is the long-rumored AR-enabled smart glasses. That version, currently being tested, is expected to be available in 2027.

Until then, Meta hopes to satiate consumers with spectacles that offer a hybrid solution somewhere between smart glasses and an AR device. The latest edition will deliver notifications and display photos on a small heads-up display at the lower portion of the viewer’s glasses. The smart glasses will also be able to run simple apps.

The new smart glasses, code-named Hypernova, have a boot screen that features Meta and its various partners, including Google/Android and chipmaker Qualcomm Inc. The latter worked with Meta on Quest headsets and wearables. Once booted, Meta’s forthcoming glasses will display a horizontal stack of icons, similar to the app dock on iPhones and MacBooks, according to Bloomberg.

Samsung, meanwhile, is prepping XR smart glasses, known internally as Project HAEAN, as part of a launch later this year with its XR headset, code-named Project Moohan. The glasses would presumably compete with Metaโ€™s Ray-Ban smart glasses.

Samsungโ€™s lightweight glasses will come with Galaxy AI and multiple cameras, based on multiple reports. They are designed to support payments, gestures, and facial-recognition capabilities.
