A recent article in Gizmodo titled “Wearables Are Getting Very Messy” highlights a growing wave of disputes in the wearable technology market. The piece points to lawsuits, accusations of copied designs and patent fights spreading across companies building fitness trackers, smart rings and smart glasses.

The example at the center of the story involves Whoop filing a lawsuit against health analytics startup Bevel. According to the report, Whoop claims Bevel copied elements of its product design and the way its app presents health metrics, what lawyers call “trade dress.” Whoop has also previously taken aim at competitors such as Polar Electro over the design of its screenless fitness band.
The legal tension is not limited to fitness trackers. The article also points to disputes involving smart glasses and neural interface technology, including claims that Meta Platforms may be infringing on patents related to electromyography-based input systems used in wearable computing.
On the surface, it looks like the wearable market is starting to unravel. Companies accusing each other of copying ideas. Lawyers stepping in. Headlines about lawsuits instead of innovation.
But if you look at what is actually happening, this moment should not surprise anyone.
At the end of the day, most of the companies building wearable technology today are competing for the same thing. Whether the device is a ring, a wristband, a pair of glasses or some new AI-powered gadget clipped to your clothing, the goal is remarkably similar. Capture signals from the human body and translate them into useful information.
Heart rate. Sleep cycles. Stress levels. Motion. Recovery. Biometrics. Over time, that dataset will only expand, potentially including emotional signals, cognitive states and other indicators of human health and behavior.
Once multiple companies begin competing for the same information layer, overlap becomes inevitable. The sensors may differ slightly and the form factors may change, but the core functionality often converges.
Some of what companies interpret as copying may simply be parallel evolution.
There is another reason similarities are emerging across wearable products. Much of the ecosystem increasingly feeds into the same underlying data platforms. Frameworks such as Apple Health serve as aggregation layers for biometric information coming from dozens of devices and applications. When products ultimately pull from the same health data foundation and present similar categories of metrics, common design patterns and user experiences are bound to appear.
That does not necessarily mean anyone is stealing anything.
It means they are building on the same base.
There is also a new dimension emerging in wearables that could expand the market far beyond fitness tracking. Increasingly, wearable devices are being positioned as personal AI assistants that live on your body.
One of the earliest attempts at this idea arrived with the Humane AI Pin, developed by a group of former Apple engineers. The device promised a screenless AI companion capable of answering questions, interpreting the environment around you and acting as a kind of ambient computing interface.
The concept generated enormous attention. The execution, however, fell short. Reviews were harsh, the product struggled to find an audience and it quickly became an example of how difficult it is to replace the smartphone.
But the core idea behind it has not gone away. In fact, advances in generative AI may finally make that vision more practical.
The newest generation of wearable devices is beginning to integrate AI models that can interpret biometric signals, environmental data and personal context in real time. Fitness trackers are evolving into health coaches. Smart glasses are becoming AI copilots that can see what you see. Rings and wristbands are starting to interpret long-term trends in sleep, recovery and stress rather than simply recording raw data.
In other words, wearables are slowly becoming the physical interface to a personal AI assistant.
If that shift takes hold, the opportunity for the wearable industry becomes dramatically larger. Instead of simply collecting data, these devices become the place where AI interacts with our bodies and daily lives. That opens entirely new areas for innovation across health monitoring, contextual computing and ambient intelligence.
It also explains why competition is intensifying.
This is not a new story in technology. When markets move from experimentation to real money, the lawyers are never far behind.
The early internet era produced endless disputes among networking and firewall vendors as similar architectures emerged across the market. The smartphone boom brought its own wave of design lawsuits, most famously between Apple and Samsung, as companies converged around the same touchscreen form factor.
Wearables appear to be entering that same phase.
For years, the category remained fragmented and experimental. Fitness trackers existed on one side of the market, medical monitoring devices on another and smart glasses were still searching for a compelling use case.
Today, the stakes are very different. Sensors are better. Battery life is improving. Artificial intelligence is making these devices more useful. At the same time, the companies building them increasingly believe that wearables could become the gateway to the most valuable dataset of all, the continuous stream of signals generated by the human body.
That kind of opportunity inevitably attracts competition.
And when competition heats up, companies begin protecting their territory. Patents get asserted. Designs get scrutinized. Lawsuits begin appearing.
It may look messy from the outside, but historically, this is exactly what happens when a technology category begins to mature. First comes experimentation, then competition and legal battles, followed by consolidation as stronger platforms emerge and weaker players disappear.
After that, innovation usually accelerates again on top of the new foundation.
So yes, the wearable market may look chaotic right now.
But if wearables are becoming the physical interface to our personal AI assistants, the battles we are seeing today may only be the opening skirmishes.
Because when the next computing platform begins to emerge, things almost always get messy.
Or as the Mandalorian likes to say, it is the way.
