Broadcom’s overhaul of VMware has been a bit like watching a massive renovation on a house you’ve lived in for twenty years. There’s some noise, some dust, and plenty of people wondering if the kitchen is still going to be in the same place when the project is done. If you look past the noisy renovations, a very specific vision for the private cloud is emerging. It’s about a fundamental shift from fragmented virtualization to a cohesive, automated private cloud experience. The VMware presentation at Cloud Field Day 25 showed us some ways Broadcom has renovated VMware.
The presentation made it pretty clear that the goal here is to bridge the gap between the old, VM-centric way of doing things and the cloud-native future. When we talk about private cloud modernization, we aren’t just talking about upgrading to the latest version of vSphere. The new approach uses VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) to create an environment that feels and behaves like a public cloud but runs on your hardware. Enabling a developer or platform engineer to request resources and get them instantly, without three different departments having to sign off on a ticket.
One of the most interesting parts of this journey is how they’re handling the “how do we get there from here” problem. Most enterprises aren’t starting from scratch; they have years, maybe decades, of legacy infrastructure and often legacy automation. Broadcom seems to understand the need for a migration path to a more modern infrastructure. They’re leaning heavily on tools that enable a gradual transition; the VCF Import tool is a great example. It’s designed to bring existing vSphere environments under VCF management without requiring you to rebuild everything from the ground up. It’s a pragmatic admission that the real world is messy.
The VMware transition also involves massive product consolidation. In the past, the VMware portfolio had dozens of different bundles and add-ons. Now, they’ve boiled it down. This is partly about making things simpler to buy, but it’s also about making things simpler to run and support. When every component is designed to work as part of a single stack, the custom integration effort is reduced. You stop spending all your time making sure the storage plugin is compatible with the hypervisor and start actually managing your services.
There’s also a big focus on what they call “cloud-native” capabilities within that private stack. We’re seeing a much tighter integration of Tanzu and Kubernetes services. The idea is that the platform shouldn’t care if you’re running a traditional virtual machine or a modern containerized application. The infrastructure should just provide the resources. If you can give your developers a consistent API and a consistent experience regardless of the workload, you’ve basically built your own developer enablement portal.
Security is another pillar of this journey. In a fragmented environment, security is usually an afterthought or a separate layer that sits atop everything else. VMware has been building security into the basic virtualization infrastructure in VCF, with micro-segmentation and distributed firewalls being standard features rather than expensive extras. It changes the conversation from “how do we secure this app” to “the platform secures the app by default.”
Change at this scale is rarely easy. There’s a learning curve for the teams involved, and a cultural shift toward a self-service model. But the endgame Broadcom is describing is much more compelling than simply maintaining the status quo. They want to move away from the “ticket-driven” data center. The vision presented at Cloud Field Day was one of maturity. It wasn’t just about the “what,” but the “how.” How do we move the needle for an enterprise that has thousands of VMs and no time to waste? The answer seems to be a combination of aggressive product simplification and better automation tools. It’s about reducing the “to-do” list for the admin so they can focus on the “what’s next” list for the business.
So, where does that leave VMware customers? We’re in the middle of a massive pivot. The focus has shifted from the hypervisor to the platform. It’s no longer about who has the best virtual machine technology; VMs aren’t a differentiator. It’s about who can provide the most cohesive, automated, and secure environment for modern applications. Broadcom is betting the farm on VCF being that platform. Whether you’re a fan of the new licensing or not, the technical direction is aimed straight at the heart of the modern, large-scale data center.
