Amazon Web Services experienced another high-profile service disruption Friday morning, temporarily disrupting widely used consumer platforms including Apple Pay, Reddit, DoorDash, Hulu and PlayStation Network. While the outage lasted little more than an hour, it marks the third significant AWS reliability incident since May, prompting attention to enterprise cloud resilience and regional redundancy.

The disruption started in AWS’s US-West-2 region in Oregon, one of the company’s largest cloud regions and a critical location for customers serving the western US and Asia-Pacific markets. Reports of service failures began around 6:40 a.m. ET, with AWS later confirming connectivity issues affecting the region before restoring normal operations later that morning.

AWS ultimately identified seven cloud services affected by the incident: Direct Connect, Global Accelerator, Internet Connectivity, IoT Core, Amazon API Gateway, ElastiCache and Elastic Container Service (ECS). Although these services operate behind the scenes rather than directly facing consumers, they support countless applications and websites, so a regional infrastructure problem cascaded across numerous online services.

The company said the disruption was caused by internet connectivity issues affecting the Oregon region rather than failures within its compute or storage infrastructure. AWS indicated that internal services continued operating normally, suggesting the problem occurred at the boundary between AWS infrastructure and the public internet. The company has not yet released a detailed root cause analysis explaining whether the issue originated within its own networking systems or involved an external connectivity provider.

Distinct From Two Earlier Incidents

Friday’s outage is distinct from two earlier incidents because each affected a different layer of AWS infrastructure. A May outage stemmed from cooling equipment failures at a Northern Virginia data center, while a June disruption was linked in reports to an external network provider. Because the latest event involved regional internet connectivity in Oregon, the reliability issues have not shared a single technical cause.

For enterprise IT leaders, that distinction may prove more significant than the outage itself. Independent failures across physical infrastructure, third-party networking and regional connectivity suggest organizations should prepare for multiple categories of service disruption rather than focusing on a single point of failure.

The incident also highlights the strategic importance of the US-West-2 region. As one of AWS’s flagship cloud regions, Oregon hosts production workloads for thousands of organizations that depend on low-latency access across North America and the Pacific. Because many enterprises continue to operate critical applications from a single cloud region, even relatively brief disruptions can interrupt customer-facing services and APIs.

Despite the latest outage, AWS is the global leader in cloud infrastructure, with an estimated 28% market share, ahead of Microsoft Azure at 21% and Google Cloud at 14%. Long-term enterprise contracts and the complexity of migrating workloads mean isolated outages rarely trigger wholesale platform changes. Instead, they often prompt companies to revisit disaster recovery strategies and identify applications that are dependent on a single AWS region.

AWS already provides mechanisms for regional resilience, including multi-region deployments and automated failover capabilities. Many organizations, however, avoid active-active regional architectures because of the additional operational complexity and cost. Friday’s disruption may encourage more enterprises to reconsider that tradeoff, particularly for mission-critical workloads such as customer-facing APIs and financial applications.

With Amazon scheduled to report quarterly earnings in the coming days, investors and enterprise customers alike will likely be watching for further details on the incident, including whether AWS provides a comprehensive postmortem and outlines additional investments aimed at strengthening regional network resilience.
