A new global survey of IT professionals can be summed up in one unfortunate truth: enterprise systems remain largely stable, but the overworked people running them are feeling the strain.
The 2026 State of System Administration report, released by IT software company PDQ, surveyed more than 1,000 system admins and related IT pros worldwide between October and December 2025. The findings indicate that workloads and responsibility are increasing faster than staffing levels or operational authority, leaving many administrators under persistent pressure.
You’re Responsible – But You’re Not in Control
Fifty-seven percent of respondents said they feel more stressed than they did a year ago. Unlike previous surveys, where stress tended to fall more heavily on junior staff, the new data shows the burden spreading across experience levels. Senior admins, in particular, are frequently the escalation point for complex technical problems that span multiple systems.
The report argues that this dynamic reflects a structural issue in modern IT operations rather than a personal failing of the professionals involved. System admins are increasingly accountable for outcomes shaped by factors outside their control, including user behavior, management decisions, and the growing complexity of software tools.
Security concerns are a major pressure point. Sixty-two percent of respondents identified a major breach or data leak as their organization’s primary operational worry. At the same time, many admins reported a mismatch between their responsibility for protecting systems and their authority to determine how risks are managed.
Daily Workload is Endless Loop
The survey reveals a daily workload that is nonstop. Tasks that admins say consume excessive time include implementing security patches, monitoring threats, troubleshooting device issues for users, maintaining aging systems, and managing compliance requirements. Each task is ongoing rather than project-based, creating a continuous operational loop rather than a workload that can be completed and set aside.
The rapid evolution of today’s enterprise infrastructure adds to the headaches. Hybrid environments that combine cloud services, on-premises systems, and older applications have become the standard operating model. Many organizations began cloud migrations years ago, but the report suggests the process rarely reaches a definitive endpoint.
Instead, IT teams must maintain complex environments where legacy applications coexist with cloud platforms. This mix creates additional work related to permissions, system integrations, cost management, and troubleshooting issues that span multiple (new and old) technologies.
Just over half of respondents said they are constantly trying to keep pace with new tools and platforms. A similar percentage reported being expected to develop expertise in technologies without receiving formal training.
Automation and AI
Most system admins are actively seeking ways to reduce operational strain. Automation is emerging as a key strategy: many organizations already automate tasks like patching and system monitoring, though fully automated environments remain uncommon.
Respondents said their ideal scenario would involve far greater automation, particularly for repetitive and high-risk tasks. But building reliable automation often requires time, standardization, and testing, resources that overstretched teams clearly lack.
AI is gaining traction as a potential tool for IT operations. A large majority of respondents said they believe AI can improve aspects of their work, particularly in areas such as data analysis, reporting, and identifying security threats.
But enthusiasm for AI declines when it comes to fully autonomous systems. Many admins expressed concern about tools operating without oversight, especially if they could create problems that human operators would then need to diagnose and fix.
The report suggests that companies may need to rethink how IT work is structured if they want to retain experienced staff and maintain tech stability. Among the possible fixes: matching responsibility with decision-making authority, standardizing systems where possible, and again, reducing manual work through automation.
In sum, for many IT teams, the challenge is no longer simply keeping systems running, it’s about maintaining the health and well-being of the people responsible for those systems.
