Dell has unveiled the PowerEdge XR9700, a ruggedized, liquid-cooled server built to operate in potentially harsh outdoor environments. The system is designed to support cloud-based radio access networks and edge AI workloads in locations where power and environmental controls are limited.

Traditional servers are typically housed in climate-controlled facilities, but equipment for the edge of the network must survive heat and cold, even moisture. Dell claims the XR9700 is engineered to close that gap.

The timing of the launch highlights the industry’s ongoing push toward 5G and distributed compute. As networks expand into crowded urban environments and remote areas, the ability to place processing power precisely where it is needed has become a strategic priority.

Extreme Cold, Extreme Heat

The server is housed in a sealed, 15-liter enclosure rated IP66, intended to protect against dust and high-pressure water. It is geared to operate in temperatures ranging from minus 40 degrees to 115 degrees (Fahrenheit) and to withstand direct sun exposure. Rather than relying on large heat sinks or traditional airflow, the system uses a closed-loop liquid cooling design to regulate temperature in a compact footprint.

Indeed, Dell executives describe the platform as enabling zero-footprint deployments, installations that do not require a separate shelter or cabinet. By mounting directly where radios are typically placed, operators can bring compute closer to where data is generated and consumed.

The XR9700 is powered by Intel’s Xeon 6 system-on-chip, incorporating integrated acceleration technologies aimed at virtualized radio access networks and AI processing. Dell says a single unit can support up to 15 5G sectors, positioning the server as a consolidation point for cloud RAN at the cell site.

Telecom and Enterprise Markets

The primary market here is telecom, though Dell is also targeting enterprise edge use cases. Manufacturing sites, remote facilities and retail locations often lack dedicated IT rooms but increasingly require local processing for analytics and automation. The XR9700’s environmental hardening, Dell claims, opens the door to deploying AI inference and other applications in places previously limited to purpose-built appliances.

Dell has framed the system as part of an open compute strategy, extending standardized, software-defined infrastructure from centralized data centers to the far edge. In contrast to single-purpose network appliances, a general-purpose x86 platform can run multiple workloads, allowing IT staff to layer new services on top of existing connectivity.

The XR9700 integrates with Dell’s existing PowerEdge XR management stack, including remote monitoring and zero-touch provisioning capabilities. The company says it is also compatible with cloud RAN software previously validated on other ruggedized systems in its portfolio, a strategy intended to streamline deployment and certification for customers standardizing on a common software baseline.

Dell expects the PowerEdge XR9700 to be available globally in the second half of 2026.
