As tech companies build the vast infrastructure needed for AI, a new nationwide protest movement is emerging to challenge this rapid expansion of AI data centers.
Organizers staged more than 140 demonstrations across some 40 states on Saturday, marking the first coordinated national campaign focused on opposition to AI data center construction. The events were organized by Humans First, a recently established nonprofit that argues local communities have been excluded from decisions that could reshape their neighborhoods.
The protesters cited issues that have come up repeatedly in locations across the US where new data center projects have been proposed. These include water consumption, electricity demand, environmental impacts, transparency in the permitting process and the economic benefits promised by developers.
Texas, one of the country’s fastest-growing markets for AI infrastructure, hosted 18 protests, the highest total of any state. Georgia followed with 11 demonstrations, while California held eight. Pennsylvania, Florida and Indiana each recorded seven events. Some rallies attracted only a dozen participants, while others drew several dozen despite high temperatures or heavy rain.
Industry representatives maintain that developers are working with governments and residents to address these issues. Josh Levi, president of the Data Center Coalition, said the industry is collaborating with policymakers and local stakeholders to ensure data centers strengthen local communities while limiting potential impacts on households and businesses.
Uniting Local Campaigns
Although participation in protests varied by location, organizers said the objective was to unite local campaigns that until now had largely operated independently.
The co-founder of Humans First, Amy Kremer, said the movement is not aligned with either political party and argued that communities should have a greater role in determining whether large-scale AI facilities are built nearby.
Rather than advocating a nationwide ban on data centers, the organization is calling for local decision-making, greater transparency during project approvals, environmental safeguards, enforceable commitments from developers and community benefits, including well-paying union jobs.
The protests highlight growing public scrutiny of an industry that has expanded rapidly as demand for generative AI accelerates. Tech giants including Meta, Alphabet, Amazon, Microsoft and xAI are investing billions of dollars in new data center capacity. More than 1,400 AI data centers had either been completed or approved by the end of 2025, with additional projects proposed this year.
Supporters argue that this infrastructure is essential to maintaining US leadership in AI, which equates to competing with China, as well as strengthening national security. They also point to construction jobs and economic development associated with large projects.
Critics, however, question whether the benefits outweigh the impact on surrounding communities. Water usage has become a highly contentious issue, particularly in drought-prone regions. One proposed project in California’s Imperial County could consume about 260 million gallons of water annually from the Colorado River, according to project opponents.
Electricity demand is another source of concern as utilities prepare for the substantial power requirements of AI computing facilities. Some local ratepayers fear that expanding infrastructure could contribute to higher utility costs.
Public opinion reveals this skepticism. A Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted in June found that only 14% of Americans would support construction of an AI data center in their own community. Roughly one-third approved of the current pace of US data center development.
