Amazon.com Inc. founder Jeff Bezos ignited a fierce global debate at the recent VivaTech 2026 conference, where he argued natural resources should be prioritized to fuel artificial intelligence (AI) rather than sustain “baseline human comfort.”
Speaking on a panel moderated by former NASA astronaut Mike Massimino alongside Blue Origin CEO Dave Limp, the 62-year-old billionaire dismissed concerns over AI-induced unemployment and environmental degradation, framing the technology as humanity’s ultimate savior.
Addressing the growing backlash over the massive volume of freshwater required to cool AI data centers, Bezos urged critics to look at the “macro-picture of our planet’s future.”
“Biological limits are real, but digital potential is infinite,” Bezos said. “If we starve our data infrastructure of cooling resources just to sustain baseline human comfort, we are actively delaying the birth of a super-intelligence that could solve all of our resource problems in the first place.”
He concluded with a statement that immediately went viral across social media, drawing sharp condemnation from critics: “Sometimes you have to prioritize the intelligence that will save us over the biology that slows us down.”
The controversy comes at a tense moment for Amazon. Data released via Amazon News reveals that the company’s global data centers consumed an estimated 2.5 billion gallons of water in 2025 alone.
While supporters viewed his comments as a pragmatic, forward-thinking look at technological evolution, critics lambasted rhetoric as dystopian, arguing it highlights a growing disconnect between tech elites and the communities bearing the environmental costs of the AI boom.
Bezos also pushed back against fears that AI will trigger widespread job losses. Instead, he predicted the technology will accelerate the “dream-build loop,” boosting human creativity to the point of causing a labor shortage.
“AI is going to create a labor shortage because it’s going to make it possible for people to identify more problems,” Bezos explained.
To illustrate his point, he cited his latest venture, Prometheus, an AI startup aiming to build an “artificial general engineer.” Bezos argued that projects like Prometheus will dramatically accelerate innovation and birth entirely new industries, meaning humanity will soon be “limited not by our capabilities but by our imaginations.”
Amazon has aggressively defended its footprint, claiming its facilities rely primarily on-air cooling, reserving water-evaporative systems for peak heat conditions. The tech giant maintains that its operations account for less than 0.5% of global industrial water use — far less than agriculture or landscaping.
“We use far less water per unit of compute than others in the global data center industry,” Amazon said in a statement, emphasizing years of investment in custom, hyper-efficient cooling technology.
However, industry analysts and local residents argue that global percentages obscure a harsher reality. According to reports cited by Ars Technica, the rapid expansion of AI infrastructure concentrates massive resource demands on specific towns and counties. In areas already grappling with drought and climate stress, residents fear that tech conglomerates are directly competing with local households and businesses for dwindling water supplies.
Stepping away from the AI debate, Bezos utilized Europe’s largest tech expo to outline his sweeping vision for extraterrestrial expansion, which he claims is vital for the coexistence of economic growth and environmental preservation.
Describing space exploration as “supply constrained, not demand constrained,” Bezos detailed plans to establish a permanent lunar base as a steppingstone to deep space.
“We’re going to the Moon to stay, not just to visit,” Bezos said. He noted that harvesting materials directly from the lunar surface requires 28 times less energy than launching them from Earth, making the Moon an ideal logistics hub for future missions, including colonies on Mars.
Ultimately, Bezos argued, moving heavy industry into space is the only way to save Earth. Through this off-world expansion, he said, our “garden planet can be returned to its pre-industrial revolution state.”
