Amazon Web Services has made its microcredentials freely available, removing a subscription requirement and widening access to a form of skills validation that emphasizes real world ability over theoretical knowledge.

Unlike traditional certifications, which usually rely on multiple-choice exams to prove expertise, microcredentials are based on hands-on tasks. Participants are placed in simulated business scenarios and must complete assignments in a live cloud environment. These tests require configuring services and resolving issues in ways that mirror day-to-day technical work.

Emphasis on microcredentials, in the view of many cloud experts, is a necessary shift because formal certifications do not always demonstrate true competence. Test takers can understand larger concepts without being able to get work done in actual conditions. Employers, in short, are looking for clearer evidence of real-world capability.

Current AWS offerings cover areas like serverless computing, application networking, incident response, and AI systems. Each assessment centers on specific tasks, like deploying infrastructure or diagnosing failures, rather than selecting answers from multiple options.

AWS Promotes Itself

The move by AWS is also self-serving, of course. By making AWS credentialing free, the company lowers the barrier to entry for staffers seeking to demonstrate practical AWS expertise. In particular, this is a new opportunity for those IT pros who have not had access to enterprise-sponsored training programs.

If there are more professionals accredited for the AWS platform, that eases the way for enterprises to adopt AWS or expand existing AWS deployments. Perhaps the only surprise here is that AWS did not make microcredentials free from the start.

Microcredentials have been around in various forms for around 15 years, but have gained more adoption over the last 10 years. Since about 2020, this skills-based testing has seen a sharp upward growth curve, and has been integrated with educational packages like those offers by Coursera and LinkedIn. Enterprises often use microcredentials as part of a continuous upskilling career ladder.

Exams from AWS and Azure are widely considered the microcredentials that offer the most career advancement, though Google is another top choice, particularly for data and AI scenarios.

Also on the rise are so-called layered microcredentials, meaning a test that offers a mix of skills. For instance, some form of combined DevOps / CI-CD credentials. In today’s mixed IT landscape, an IT pro who can demonstrate expertise in a multi-cloud environment, or across IT disciplines (like Azure plus Security) is in greater demand.

The demand for cloud and AI skills continues to accelerate, with AI skills of course commanding a premium at this point. Indeed, companies are adopting AI technologies faster than they can train staff, creating a gap between certification and applied experience.

Future Hiring and Training

The microcredential approach aligns with an overall emphasis on experience-based learning in technical training. Over the past several years, organizations have increasingly relied on labs, simulations, and competitive exercises to build skills. Formats like guided workshops and scenario-based challenges have gained popularity because they expose participants to unpredictable conditions, requiring problem-solving rather than memorization.
