Almost 50,000 residents around Lake Tahoe have received bad news from their utility provider: much of their electricity supply could be redirected away from local communities and toward Nevada’s rapidly expanding AI data center sector.

Nevada utility NV Energy has decided to end an agreement that currently supplies about 75% of the electricity used by Liberty Utilities customers on the California side of Lake Tahoe. The arrangement is scheduled to expire in May 2027, leaving Liberty Utilities searching for replacement energy sources in a tightening regional power market increasingly dominated by hyperscalers’ data centers.

While utilities insist the transition was planned years ago and does not mean customers will lose power outright, local residents and advocacy groups argue the practical effect is the same: electricity once committed to Tahoe communities is being absorbed by a regional grid already facing surging demand from AI data centers.

NV Energy has rejected claims that it is abandoning Lake Tahoe specifically to support data centers. The company says the transition was planned well before the recent acceleration in AI infrastructure development and is tied to longstanding contractual arrangements.

At the same time, NV Energy is expanding its transmission network through projects including the Greenlink West line, which could eventually help stabilize regional power delivery. But those projects remain under development, leaving a narrow timetable for Liberty Utilities to finalize replacement supply plans.

Major Data Center Hub

The Lake Tahoe dispute has become one of the most dramatic examples yet of how AI is reshaping energy allocation across the US.

Northern Nevada has evolved into a major data center hub, helped by tax incentives, available land and proximity to Silicon Valley. Tech giants including Google, Microsoft and Apple operate facilities in the region, while additional proposed projects are expected to greatly increase electricity demand over the next several years.

Some projections tied to regional planning estimate future data center demand could require several gigawatts of new generating capacity. Nevada data centers already account for a sizable share of statewide electricity consumption, with forecasts indicating that percentage could rise substantially by the decade’s end.

For Lake Tahoe residents, the concern is not simply about future AI growth but about how the region’s unusual electrical setup limits alternatives.

Although Liberty Utilities serves California communities around the lake, much of its power has come through NV Energy’s transmission system. The Tahoe area lacks a major direct connection into California’s broader electrical grid, making it difficult to quickly replace lost power supply.

Building new transmission infrastructure across the Sierra Nevada mountains would probably require years of regulatory review and perhaps as much as hundreds of millions of dollars in financing. As a result, Liberty Utilities has limited time to negotiate replacement contracts while balancing affordability and California energy requirements.

Local Backlash

The uncertainty has triggered backlash from local organizations and public officials who argue the transition is moving too quickly and without sufficient public oversight.

South Lake Tahoe Mayor Cody Bass recently warned state regulators that residents and businesses remain deeply concerned about potential reliability issues and rising electricity costs. Community groups including Tahoe Spark and the Sierra Club’s Tahoe Area Group are pressing regulators to slow the process and conduct a more transparent review of long-term energy planning for the region.

One key challenge: smaller communities are at a disadvantage when competing for electricity against billion-dollar AI infrastructure projects capable of securing long-term energy deals at scale.

Meanwhile, residents point to electricity bills that have already risen sharply in recent years, increasing fears that the AI infrastructure boom will continue driving costs higher across western power markets.
