Programmable Solutions Group Spun-off by Intel | Gestalt IT Rundown: October 4, 2023

October 4, 2023

Intel is set to spin off its Programmable Solutions Group as an independent business, aiming for an IPO in 2-3 years. PSG, led by Intel’s current Data Center and AI Group EVP Sandra Rivera, will operate independently as part of Intel’s broader restructuring efforts. Despite PSG’s past financial success, Intel believes this shift will enable more agility and growth, targeting markets beyond data centers. The goal is to retain majority ownership while allowing PSG to operate autonomously in the competitive FPGA market, similar to Intel’s approach with Mobileye.

Meet Matt Tyrer, Founder and Chief Analyst at the Competitive Corner

September 22, 2023

Meet Matt Tyrer, the Founder and Chief Analyst at the Competitive Corner. Born and raised in Iowa, Matt is 20 years an IT veteran with focus on data protection. Formerly a Unix system administrator, Matt has spent the last 15 years in Commvault where he engineered a Competitive Intelligence Program. After his success leading the program, he went on to form his own consultancy, The Competitive Corner, doing market research and competitive analysis for businesses. As a long-time professional, one of the biggest challenges Matt faces is the hype cycle roller coaster. For Matt, keeping up with new trends is about drilling into the macro and micro factors. To achieve a well-rounded understanding of any technology, one has to be on a constant learning curve, he says. And when it comes to learning, Matt says his go-to resource is Tech Field Day presentations, where he learns about technology specifications and use cases from an user standpoint. Remembering his early years in IT, Matt said that he entered the industry with a clean slate. He did not have the coding background of some of his peers, but Matt had something far more important – a mastery of logic which served him well with technical problem-solving. Matt got his first taste of computer with a home video game console, the Atari 2600, which he played on a black and white TV until color televisions came. When asked about what an alternative career might have been for him, Matt’s answer was to own a pub and tend the bar. Welcome to the club, Matt, and thank you for joining us for Tech Field Day Extra at VMware Explore US 2023!

Microsoft’s Security Leaks Get Worse | Gestalt IT Rundown: September 20, 2023

September 20, 2023

Microsoft’s AI division just found out they made a mistake. Three years ago they accidentally leaked 38 terabytes of data to a public GitHub repo while contributing to AI learnign models. A security research team found the exposure recently, which came from a misconfigured Azure Blob storage URL that was overly permissive and difficult to manage. This Shared Access Signature, or SAS, token is designed to give teams full control over shared files. However, the difficulty in managing it makes it appear almost impossible to use correctly. The leaked data included passwords, keys, and an archive of internal Microsoft Teams messages.

September 13, 2023

Khan says that we need to get tougher by ensuring these naer-do-wells can face justice for their crimes, especially when they impact so many people around the world. This and more on this week’s Rundown.

Once Again, Snapshots Are Not Backups

September 5, 2023

Snapshots are still not backups but the nature of data storage means care must be taken to determine data retention requirements. In this episode of the On-Premise IT Podcast, Brian Knudtson, Matt Tyrer, and Richard Kenyan discuss the nature of data protection and recovery point objectives. The rapid pace of cloud storage growth as well as the shift toward using microservices and serverless computing have added additional challenges to the definition of data that needs to be backed up. In addition, the terminology changes with major companies in the space have created confusion in features.
