Zetta was an early Field Day supporter, presenting all the way back in 2010 at our first event at VMworld. Since then the company has had its ups and downs, and now seems to be “out”: It has been purchased by Arcserve, as reported by Ben Kepes.
WekaIO Matrix is an impressive new entrant in the world of high-performance distributed storage, and the cloud connector is a nice complement. The company brings all the latest trends together (distributed storage, NVMe, flash, cloud) in a useful solution. And by targeting HPC, WekaIO has selected a ripe target.
Greg Ferro is correct about the misconceptions many people have about the human resources (HR) department at their company. Although the people in the HR department aren’t necessarily bad, their organizational mission is service to the company and the law, not service to the employees. They’re usually happy to help employees if it helps the company, but that’s about all they can do.
Intel did most of what they needed to do with the Xeon Scalable launch. There’s enough of a speed boost to get noticed, some interesting new options for server builds, and some cool low-level features that are going to matter in HPC and ML. This may be the biggest datacenter platform in a decade for Intel but it’s not a massive advancement overall.
ASUS just launched the first sub-$100 NBASE-T adapter using Aquantia silicon. This adapter supports 100 Mbps “Fast Ethernet”, Gigabit Ethernet, 2.5 and 5 Gbps NBASE-T and regular 10GBASE-T. It will scale performance based on the port on the other end of the wire as well as the quality of that wire.
AMD Epyc sounds pretty epic, with epoch-defining memory, I/O, and even cores of a dual-socket server in a single socket. And that’s something to get excited about, especially considering that the Zen cores inside these chips are almost at IPC parity with Intel’s latest, and can handle dual threads like Intel, too.
If data is locked in the datacenter, so are applications. The first step towards overcoming data gravity is to discard the concept of data locality and begin building a new infrastructure. Once data is “there”, in the cloud, applications may begin moving as well.
Las Vegas can be daunting for the uninitiated, especially if they’re more intent on attending the event than hitting the Strip. So we loved seeing Jim Jones recent “Vegas for Newbies” article. Although we’ve got our own secrets (we go there at least half a dozen times a year for tech shows), Jim’s suggestions are dead on.

Although most of the attention at NetApp’s “Data Driven” event yesterday in Boulder, CO was focused on the new HCI offering, my interest was aroused by a different announcement: NetApp is now powering an enterprise-class storage offering integrated with Microsoft Azure. In the long run, this move into the cloud might well prove more important than even a solid entrant in the hot hyperconverged infrastructure market.
