News came out today in The Marker that Microsoft is looking into an acquisition of Mellanox. This would likely mark a major shift to in-house hardware development for Azure, and could form the basis of a composable cloud offering in Microsoft’s cloud. But it would also take a major (if un-heralded) player out of the market for everyone else.
Today two familiar names completed an acquisition: Mark Lewis and Bill Miller made a deal. The re-born Violin Systems has purchased the legendary ISE storage product line from X-IO, while that company’s Axellio product is now its own company. This accomplishes quite a lot for both players, though time will tell if it creates long-lasting players in the industry.
I’ve long been skeptical of an ARM transition for Apple Macintosh, but the 2018 iPad Pro has made me a believer. Apple will switch to in-house hardware and this new generation of “ARMacintosh” computers will blow away the rest of the client computing market. And the only way a company could challenge Apple’s escalating dominance in mobile and tablets would be a radical new device.
NetApp HCI was never “hyperconverged infrastructure” in the classic sense, but that never mattered. HCI customers would be well-served by the product, and the company is marketing and developing it in a way that is consistent with what customers are coming to expect. As customers move to converged and cloud solutions, NetApp wants to make sure they can keep them in the fold.
NetApp is in a unique position to integrate legacy, hybrid, and cloud storage, announcing their “Data Fabric” vision a few years back. Until NetApp Insight 2018, this all seemed like so much marketecture or vaporware. But the company is starting to make it happen, with real data services, orchestration, and management solutions coming to market.
As I reflect on my time in Nashville for Commvault GO 2018, I am struck by the impact this conference must have had for Commvault, its partners, and its customers. Although not small by any means, this Commvault-centric conference benefited from the self-contained environment at the Gaylord Opryland, resulted in a more intimate environment. I saw many instances of deep connections developing between the company and the attendees, showing why their investment was well worth it!
Excellent management tools aren’t enough to sell an expensive server, but they certainly differentiate it in the face of similarly-specified competitors. If it’s really going to be a revolution, Intel and Micron have got to start talking about it more seriously and enterprise vendors have to start delivering 3D XPoint-powered products.
