If you need more storage on-prem, you throw a couple of pizza boxes on the rack, adding storage, but also compute, memory, connectivity. That’s great, if you just happen to need your storage to scale according to your vendor’s specification.

8TB disks still looking solid, seem to be some of Seagate’s best

Backblaze published their drive reliability figures. They’ve got a few drives to derive data from, having 300PB of data kind of requires it. The company recently upgraded from 2TB drives from HGST and Western Digital to new Seagate 8TB drives. There was some concern that if these had significantly higher failure rates than the 2TB drive they would prove less cost effective. Afterall, the the HGST drives had a failure rate of just 1.6%.

Tech Field Day Events 2017

The Tech Field Day team has a full roster of events for 2017. They will host two main events, starting in Austin from February 1st-3rd. The second comes on September 27th-29th in Silicon Valley. In between, there will also be three Tech Field Day Extra events at Intertop, Cisco Live US, and VMWorld US.

Oracle Set to Close on NetSuite Acquisition

It looks like Oracle’s announced acquisition of NetSuite may finally be going forward. Announced in July, but mired in shareholder conflict within NetSuite, the acquisition plan was in a bit of a holding pattern. With NetSuite’s largest shareholder being Oracle co-founder and executive chairman Larry Ellison, the acquisition agreement required a majority of the unaffiliated 40.8 million shares of stock to vote in favor of the deal, at a price of $109 a share.
