Dreaming of SCM but living with NVDIMMs…

December 9, 2016

Do you like IOPS? How about millions of IOPS? Ray Lucchesi gives a breakdown of NVDIMMs, including where they are at in terms of development and usability. What surprised me was how relatively robust the hardware is compared to the software. Right now there is no standard on how to address the disks on a file system level, which is needed to really leverage their faster performance. It’s an interesting introduction into the technology.

SimpliVity in More Places

December 9, 2016

Following partnerships with many of the larger server vendors, including Cisco, Dell, and Lenovo, Simplivity is now working Huawei. The partnership brings the company’s OmniStack technology to Huawei’s FusionServer RH2288H V3. It speaks for how well Simplivity’s HCI solution is regarded that they’re reaching these partnership even with companies that offer competing ones.

I can make these puns all day

Strong-ARMing the Server Market with Kaleao

December 9, 2016

Kaleao is offering what they are referencing as a “true convergence” solution in their KMAX Server. I was naturally a little skeptical, the word convergence gets thrown around with abandon in enterprise IT, and KMAX sounds like a range of Kodak black and white film. But the more I read, the more I was interested.

Bluetooth 5: Our Last, Best Hope for Wireless

December 8, 2016

Dennis Sellers shares some of the news on the Bluetooth 5 specification. Bluetooth is the TGI Friday’s of technology: there’s generally not a lot genuinely bad, but there’s nothing to really entice me to use it, other than availability.

State of the Industry: Amazon Web Services

December 8, 2016

Have you heard of this Amazon Web Services thing? The AWS re:Invent 2016 conference concluded last week. In a lot of ways, their strategy resembles what Netflix does (which ironically runs on AWS). They currently have such a dominant market position, so they can afford to invest in a lot of the smaller use cases. A lot of the features they offered seem to only appeal to very niche cases. That’s just what Amazon wants, making themselves indispensable for a large number of small groups.

StorPool: Truly Distributed Storage

December 8, 2016

A lot of vendors claim to have distributed storage. Certainly many of them will sell a solution marketed as distributed. The issue is that a lot of what is marketed as distributed relies on legacy implementation. These were made with the standard storage needs in mind. Capacity, reliability, and speed aren’t hard to find these days. You know what is really hard to do? True distributed storage. That’s where StorPool comes in.

I Accidentally Started a Blog with Amazon Lightsail

December 7, 2016

I was reviewing some of the announcements from AWS re:Invent 2016. The sheer number is kind of bewildering. It’s hard to look past the ridiculous 100PB on wheels, AWS Snowmobile, which brings together all the business savvy of a SAN with the subtly of Mad Max: Fury Road. Still in making my way through the announcements, a small one stood out to me, Amazon Lightsail.

Docker Acquires Storage Startup Infinit

December 6, 2016

Of course, just after my Docker post, we get some interesting Docker news! It looks like Docker has acquired storage startup Infinit. If you’re never heard of Infinit, don’t worry, the name was new to me too. Looking at the announcement blog post, it’s clear the acquisition is aimed at clearing up one of Docker’s glaring deficiencies: storage.

The Job Search: Interviewing Tips

December 6, 2016

Erik Freeland gives some great advise on how to deal with technical questions in a job interview. It’s important to realize that on these, there’s rarely a designed “perfect answer”, rather the interviewer is looking to gauge your understanding in general.
