Whenever I visualized SD-WAN, it always seemed like it would have to be a relatively top-down solution. A lot of what I’ve seen in the category certainly seems to shift this way, with SD-WAN companies working with service provides to implement their solutions. There’s nothing wrong with this approach, as long as it delivers the intended functionality.
Docker is the company everyone loves to talk about. They’ve been the subject of acquisition rumors for years. Everyone wants to try them out, even if they don’t fully understand what they do. And they’ve spurred an ecosystem of companies eager to extend what their product can do. Docker is the new Twitter.
In getting ready for Networking Field Day, I wanted to make sure I had a feel for all the companies. Most of this was pretty easy, even for the newer players, there was some published content about what they were offering. At the very least, there was a general sense of what we would see, even if there were a dearth of technical detail. For Forward Networks, admittedly still in stealth prior to the event, there was a vacuum. The best I could find was a Medium post by Andrew Wesbecher, their Head of Sales. From this I learned Forward wanted “to help enterprises avert costly network failures stemming from misconfiguration and other human error.” Okay…
Going into their building for their presentation, I was immediately struck by the building as an institution. Other companies we saw had offices, perhaps a floor. Dell EMC has a campus. When you’re there, the company surrounds you, ensconces you in a building created just for them. It was a space you could explore, perhaps get lost in. Luckily we were given generous supervision to get us to the Isilon presentation.

Between backup software, servers, proxies, catalog databases, tape archives, and offsite storage there are a lot of places for things to go wrong, or get siloed off. Rubrik thinks they have a more complete offering that brings together all of these elements into one manageable service.
I saw Igneous Systems present at Tech Field Day earlier this month. Their offering is a bit of an odd mix at first. They want to offer the benefits of Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) for data that cannot be stored in the cloud. This seemed counter intuitive, after all, what else would you use the cloud for? But Igneous has a clever solution.
DriveScale wants to change how storage is considered in your datacenter. Think about how storage is added to a typical setup. If you need more storage on-prem, you throw a couple of pizza boxes on the rack, adding storage, but also compute, memory, connectivity. That’s great, if you just happen to need your storage to scale according to your vendor’s specification.
