At Gestalt IT, we’re no stranger to the contentious confusion over “premise” vs “premises” (have you seen our podcast?). Dave Henry wrote up his thoughts on the mini-controversy. They’re well reasoned and I agree with his ultimate conclusion, there’s simply more precise verbiage available that makes the entire argument moot.
But I have to take some issue with Dave’s process up to that point.
Intel’s Itanium processors remind me of the promise of every musical supergroup. He see the individual parts and think, “how could this not be awesome?!” Yet in the end, you’re left with a whole less than the sum of its parts. An overly ambitious, bloated, and unnecessary being is usually the result.
The Croesus-like revenue typically seen in Apple’s quarterly earnings can be a little blinding at times. When your revenue is regularly above $40 billion every three months, it’s easy to see single digit fluctuations as rounding errors. But in the end, these large overall numbers can often hide local fluctuations that would otherwise change the narrative around the Cupertino giant. Ben Thompson sees just such a problem in the company’s China strategy.

Confused over the redirection on Github from Docker to Moby? Not sure what this means, or how the two are related? Ajeet Singh Raina compares it to the relationship with Red Hat and Fedora. It’s a pretty perfect analogy to properly frame how the two are linked.
Sadly, Gestalt IT can’t be on the ground to cover the announcements directly from Dell EMC World 2017. But when people like John Herbert are there, it’s just as good. He provides some great insight into how Dell EMC is finally differentiating their networking group from an afterthought to a viable option. John also gives a rundown of the updates to their switch lineup.
The idea behind composable infrastructure is so cool, it seems like it has to be made up. The basic concept it to be able to dynamically use pooled resources to make servers that fit your current need, rather than make applications and use cases conform to fixed hardware. If I had to personify composable infrastructure, it would be a transformer that’s made up of grey goo nanobots.
Liqid’s composable infrastructure bridges the gap with this fantastic idea with PCIe Fabric and bare metal goodness. Sadly no nanobots.

Also for reference, the first Google result for RDMA is the “Radio Disney Music Awards”. I believe Chin-Fah is referring to Remote Direct Memory Access. Otherwise his post is very confusing.
