Making a technical decision is a difficult responsibility. Often there isn’t a clear best choice, and sometimes, the scope of impact of a decision is so vast that you want to weigh the pluses and minuses over and over, instead of just going with your gut.

Rebecca Fitzhugh, author, consulting architect, and a Field Day delegate lays out the steps of making sound technical decisions. In an article titled “Making a Technical Decision”, she writes –

Decision-making is the cognitive process of selecting a course of action among several possible alternative options. Technical decision-making is less about the tool to pick and more about the problem to solve. Once the problem space is well defined, then evaluating the possible solutions becomes a lot easier. Technical decision-making cannot be outsourced.
