IonQ has introduced Superion, its sixth-generation quantum computing platform that starts with a 256-qubit system and is designed to serve as the foundation for larger fault-tolerant machines.

Superion 256 contains a quantum processing unit fabricated at SkyWater, the U.S. foundry IonQ acquired in July. IonQ said it has produced the first fully integrated Superion chips there and has trapped ions in prototype systems under construction at multiple U.S. facilities. The system is available to order now, with customer deliveries planned for 2027.

A defining feature of Superion is how it controls its trapped-ion qubits, which use charged atoms held in place to store quantum information. The system uses electronics integrated onto the chip rather than relying on the laser systems traditionally used to control trapped ions. The electronic qubit-control technology came from Oxford Ionics, which IonQ acquired in 2025. IonQ said the approach allows the control technology to be produced using standard semiconductor processes and is designed to reduce reliance on individually built systems in favor of higher-volume production. The complete computer occupies the footprint of a standard server rack, the company said.

IonQ acquired SkyWater for approximately $1.8 billion in cash and stock. The company now operates as a subsidiary while continuing to serve outside foundry customers. The acquisition gave IonQ direct access to SkyWater’s chip fabrication, wafer services and advanced packaging capabilities. IonQ said working with SkyWater shortened the Superion design cycle from nine months to two months and produced 12 times as many wafer lots over a six-month period compared to a previous foundry.

IonQ is also developing Superion 10K, a larger system designed to scale the platform from 256 to 10,000 physical qubits by integrating CMOS circuitry directly onto the chip. The company said it is developing the 256 and 10K generations concurrently and displayed its first cryogenic CMOS test chips for Superion 10K today at the New York Stock Exchange. Superion 10K will be the first hardware generation built to run IonQ’s Walking Cat architecture, which lays out how applications are compiled into instructions, errors are corrected and ions move across the chip. IonQ said it is targeting a fully fault-tolerant 10,000-physical-qubit system in 2027, followed by manufacturable commercial fault-tolerant systems in 2028.

Superion was one of several announcements today at IonQ’s Investor Day event, alongside an updated financial outlook and a new quantum security agreement. The company increased its 2026 revenue forecast to between $450 million and $460 million, up from previous guidance of $280 million to $290 million. The new forecast includes SkyWater revenue from the July 31 acquisition through year-end, while the earlier guidance excluded SkyWater entirely. The new outlook also eliminates estimated revenue from transactions between IonQ and SkyWater, which are now internal to the combined company.

IonQ also announced an $8.18 million agreement with data management provider Congruity360. Congruity360 plans to use IonQ post-quantum cryptography and quantum key distribution appliances to protect data moving between customer locations, to add quantum-safe networking to its enterprise data management platform.
