Storage buyers are getting squeezed from both ends right now. Flash prices have jumped more than 400% over the past year, driven largely by hyperscalers buying up NAND and DRAM to feed their AI clusters. At the same time, lead times on high-performance hardware have stretched out to 26 weeks in some cases. If you’re trying to plan a storage refresh for a production workload, that’s a problem with no clean answer on the hardware side.

The legacy path isn’t much better. Staying on older NAS platforms means paying extended support contracts that can run past 150% of what the original system cost, for a single additional year of coverage. That’s not a maintenance fee. That’s a penalty for not buying new hardware you can’t get anyway.

Qumulo and Cisco have been working on a response to exactly this situation. They’re calling it Bridge-to-Cloud, and at Cisco Live, they laid out how it works in practice. I was fortunate enough to be a part of the conversation recently during Cisco Live US along with Brandon Whitelaw, SVP and Head of Product for Qumulo.

Building a Bridge

The idea is straightforward. Extend existing file workloads into the cloud without forcing a migration. Qumulo’s Cloud Native software runs on Cisco UCS on-premises, and connects to public cloud deployments on AWS, Azure, GCP, or OCI through what Qumulo calls the Cloud Data Fabric. From the user’s perspective, data looks and behaves like it’s local, regardless of where it actually lives. Qumulo’s NeuralCache engine is what makes it technically credible. It uses predictive prefetching to pull data before applications ask for it, which masks the latency that would otherwise make cloud-extended storage feel sluggish.

There are three specific deployment patterns Qumulo and Cisco have outlined. The first is a Cloud Archive model, where legacy NAS gets migrated onto Cisco UCS and connected to a cold cluster in the cloud. The data is accessible and searchable, but it’s sitting in lower-cost cloud storage rather than on expensive flash. The second is the Cloud Based Hot Edge, where all data is actively persisted in a cloud-based hot cluster while the on-premises UCS system handles local access. That one is built for organizations that want the cloud to be the primary home for their data, not just an overflow bucket.

The third pattern is for anyone sitting on existing NAS hardware that still has physical life in it. Qumulo calls it the Reuse Hardware Bridge. You install Qumulo’s software on the legacy hardware you already own, turn it into a local hot edge, and connect it to a cloud-based CNQ system through the Cloud Data Fabric. The hardware doesn’t go anywhere. You’re not paying for new Cisco UCS in that scenario, and you’re not paying the legacy support tax either. You’re getting new software behavior out of old iron, which is a reasonable trade when the alternative is a 26-week wait for gear that costs four times what it did two years ago.

Because the Cloud Data Fabric maintains a unified global namespace across edge and cloud, data that lives in the cloud-based CNQ cluster is directly accessible to services like AWS Bedrock, Google Vertex AI, and Microsoft AI Foundry without making a copy of it first. Zero-copy access matters when you’re talking about unstructured file datasets at scale, where even the prep work for an AI pipeline can get expensive fast. Eliminating that copy step removes both cost and latency from the workflow.

Bringing IT All Together

Taken together, what Qumulo and Cisco have built is a practical response to a genuinely difficult market condition. When hardware is scarce, slow to deliver, and expensive, the ability to decouple data from the physical layer has actual financial value. Whether Bridge-to-Cloud delivers on that in every deployment will depend on the details, but the architecture is coherent and the problem it’s solving is real. That’s a reasonable starting point for any conversation about where enterprise storage goes from here.
