Every June, International Women in Engineering Day lands on the calendar and the tech industry does what it always does — posts some supportive content, shares a few LinkedIn graphics, and moves on. This year feels a little different, and not in the way the organizers probably hoped. DEI programs across corporate America are being cut, reframed, or quietly shelved. The political headwinds are real, and anyone paying attention knows it. So celebrating a day dedicated to women in engineering in 2026 requires a bit more intellectual honesty than usual, because you can’t separate it entirely from a broader conversation that has gotten very loud and very contentious.
But what I keep coming back to is this: the argument for encouraging more women into engineering has almost nothing to do with that fight, and we lose something important when we let the DEI debate swallow up a much more basic observation about where the world is heading.
Software engineering was once considered a niche specialty, the domain of people comfortable with pocket protectors and hexadecimal. That world is gone. Engineering has expanded into almost every corner of how modern civilization operates. The AI systems reshaping knowledge work are engineering problems at their core — problems of architecture, infrastructure, training pipelines, and inference at scale. The quantum computing efforts underway at IBM, Google, and a dozen well-funded startups are engineering problems. The push to achieve practical fusion energy, which finally seems within reach after decades of perpetual optimism, is an engineering problem. Bioengineering is quietly rewriting what’s possible in medicine. Semiconductors, cybersecurity, advanced manufacturing, digital infrastructure — the list keeps growing.
Estelle Azemard, who leads engineering work at Leaseweb, put it plainly when she noted that engineering now sits at the intersection of AI, sustainability, healthcare, transportation, energy, and the digital infrastructure that everything else depends on. That’s not marketing language. That’s an accurate description of where engineering sits in 2026 relative to the problems that actually matter. The profession has moved from supporting society to actively shaping it.
Against that backdrop, the underrepresentation of women in engineering is not primarily a social justice concern, though reasonable people can hold that view too. It’s a talent and capacity concern. The engineering challenges ahead are genuinely hard. Anyone who thinks the semiconductor industry has the workforce it needs to execute on the ambitions being floated around advanced packaging and domestic chip manufacturing hasn’t spent much time talking to the people running those programs. Anyone who thinks the AI infrastructure buildout has an excess of qualified people isn’t reading the same hiring reports I am. These fields need smart, rigorous, creative people. They need people who bring different angles of approach to difficult problems.
This is what Chrissay Brinkmann at Leaseweb was getting at when she observed that some of the best engineering solutions emerge when someone asks a question nobody else thought to ask. That’s not a feel-good platitude — it describes something real about how hard problems actually get solved. Monocultures of perspective tend to optimize well within existing frameworks and struggle at the edges, where genuinely novel solutions live. The more engineering teams look like only one kind of person, the more they risk asking only certain kinds of questions.
None of this requires accepting any particular position in the current political debate about DEI. You can think affirmative action policies are misguided and still believe that a profession increasingly responsible for the future of energy, healthcare, and artificial intelligence benefits from drawing on as much of the talent pool as possible. You can be skeptical of corporate diversity mandates and still think it’s worth examining why women who show aptitude for mathematics and physics are less likely to pursue engineering careers than their male counterparts. These are separable questions, even if the current political environment wants to bundle them together.
The periods of genuine technological breakthrough tend to follow periods of workforce expansion. The internet era pulled in people who would never have considered careers in technology a generation earlier — and the industry exploded with ideas and companies and things nobody had predicted. The mobile era did the same thing. Each expansion of who got to participate in building things brought with it a corresponding expansion of what got built.
Engineering is at another one of those inflection points, arguably the most consequential one yet. The problems on the table — energy, health, intelligence, security — are not incremental. They are civilization-scale. And the engineering workforce that will work through them is being shaped right now, by the pipeline decisions that universities, companies, and culture are making today.
International Women in Engineering Day exists because that pipeline still has a meaningful gap in it. Not because of politics, and not because of quotas, but because nearly half the population remains significantly underrepresented in the profession doing more of the world’s most important work. Whatever one thinks about the policy debates swirling around DEI right now, that basic observation doesn’t change. Engineering needs every great mind it can find, and it doesn’t have them yet.
