SUSE today revealed it has allied with Cloudbase Solutions to accelerate the pace at which applications can be migrated from legacy platforms and cloud computing environments to its open source platform.
Announced at the SUSECON2026 conference, Cloudbase Solutions has developed a Coriolis migration tool that can be used to migrate workloads to a Kernel-based virtual machine (KVM) platform provided by SUSE.
The Coriolis Migration tool is based on an agentless, software-defined framework that is used to both migrate workloads and provide disaster recovery capabilities. It is based on an application programming interface (API) that enables incremental data replication in a way that enables virtual machine workloads to be more easily migrated to a new IT environment. Specifically, the Coriolis Migration tool enables non-disruptive migrations to ensure applications remain available as data is transferred to eliminate the need for long maintenance windows or weekend service outages.
Peter Smails, senior vice president and general manager for cloud-native at SUSE, said the Coriolis Migration Tool significantly reduces the amount of manual labor required to migrate applications by going beyond merely converting a virtual machine into a KVM to reduce costs and accelerate the pace at which a migration can be made.
IT teams can elect to pull workloads from VMware vSphere or a cloud computing environment to run them on a SUSE Virtualization platform that can run both legacy monolithic applications and cloud-native applications designed for Kubernetes clusters. That’s critical because increasingly platform engineering and DevOps teams are now managing cloud-native applications alongside IT administrators who historically managed legacy monolithic applications, noted Smails.
Additionally, SUSE has specified a migration path for SAP application servers and SAP HANA databases that can be migrated to the SUSE KVM platform.
Collectively, these capabilities enable SUSE to become a much more strategic partner to IT teams, many of which are under pressure to reduce costs as quickly as possible, noted Smails.
It’s not clear how many IT teams are moving workloads off of VMware environments or looking to repatriate cloud computing workloads onto either another cloud-based or on-premises IT environment.
Mitch Ashley, a vice president and practice lead for software lifecycle engineering at The Futurum Group, said SUSE Virtualization is now closing operational gaps that kept enterprise IT organizations on legacy platforms by enabling coexistence in a way that lets IT teams stage migrations rather than having to cut over all at once, he added.
Hopefully, artificial intelligence (AI) tools will one day soon make it much easier to migrate applications and workloads that historically have required months, sometimes even years, to migrate from one platform to another. Ultimately, IT teams should be able to reduce their dependency on any given platform to reduce lock-in dependencies that today give providers of IT platforms more leverage over licensing costs than many organizations now appreciate.
In the meantime, IT teams might want to revisit their entire IT strategy rather than simply focusing on one specific platform where increased licensing costs in the past year have led to some much more heated discussions.
