In the AI era, criminals have discovered a new, remarkably lucrative target: shipments of advanced computer hardware used in AI systems and data centers.
The unfortunate trend reflects the explosive growth of AI infrastructure, which has created a stream of high-value components being shipped cross country, including GPUs and specialized server equipment. The shipments can be worth millions of dollars in a single trailer, making them appealing targets for organized crime groups.
Data from the cargo security firm Verisk CargoNet shows the financial impact rising sharply. Reported cargo theft losses reached about $725 million in the United States last year, a jump of roughly 60 percent. Yet the number of incidents remained relatively steady at around 3,600 cases annually, so the value of stolen shipments has increased even as the number of thefts has not.
The trend throughout 2025 “continued to shift from opportunistic theft to highly targeted, intelligence‑driven crime,” Keith Lewis, VP of operations at Verisk CargoNet, told Techstrong.it. “Organized groups are increasingly going after shipments with the high resale value, and the least friction in secondary markets.” Lewis noted that this includes enterprise computing hardware, cryptocurrency mining equipment, and metals like copper.
Ironically, thieves are using today’s advanced tech to help them still tech hardware. “As supply chains become more digitized and fragmented, thieves are using the same technology and data signals as legitimate businesses to identify, intercept, and redirect high‑value freight with precision,” Lewis said.
The Sopranos, Circa 2026
For years, cargo criminals frequently targeted everyday consumer products. Episodes of the Sopranos routinely showed the mob hijacking trucks to steal TVs and cameras. But with AI systems now overtaking the tech sector, shipments of specialized electronics have become a far more profitable target.
For thieves, the advantage is that high-value tech gear packs enormous financial worth into relatively small volumes. A single truck trailer filled with computer components can carry goods worth tens of millions of dollars.
Across the country, companies are building new data centers and expanding cloud computing capacity, driving demand for next-gen hardware such as GPUs, high-speed memory modules and server racks. Those components are shipped constantly between manufacturers and installation sites, creating countless targets.
Recent theft cases reported by the Washington Post illustrate how valuable those shipments can be. One case involved a man who appeared at a shipping company in Salt Lake City posing as the driver assigned to haul a trailer to Texas. Days later, authorities located the abandoned trailer, which had been filled with 40 server racks and more than 100,000 memory modules used in AI data centers, a haul valued at about $31 million.
Evolving Tactics
Data from CargoNet indicates that several states saw significant increases in shipment theft, including Pennsylvania (up 24 percent), Indiana (up 30 percent), and New Jersey (up 50 percent).
The scale of the problem may be larger than statistics suggest. Cargo theft is not tracked under a single national category, and incidents may be recorded as vehicle theft or property crimes, depending on the jurisdiction. The true financial losses could be many times higher than the publicly reported totals.
As the value of targets have increased, criminal tactics have evolved. Earlier cargo theft operations often relied on opportunistic theft, like stealing trucks when drivers stopped at rest areas. While those methods still occur, investigators say modern theft rings increasingly rely on deception and manipulation of logistics systems.
In some cases, criminals create fake trucking companies or falsified shipping documents to obtain legitimate pickup assignments. Once a trailer leaves a warehouse under what appears to be a routine delivery, it may disappear entirely before anyone realizes a crime has occurred.
